VMware

VMware is the leading provider of virtualization software and cloud infrastructures. They make virtualization solutions for desktop, data center and server environments.

Why VMware?

Many organizations today are looking into changing their physical desktop infrastructure into a more flexible, secure and reliable application delivery platform, with no dependencies on devices and locations.

As these transformations can be quite complex, the choice for the right virtualization platform is crucial.

SecureLink advises VMware for most EUC deployments because:

  • VMware vSphere is the leading virtualization platform and provides unbeatable reliability, high availability, business continuity, and fault tolerance.
  • The tight integration between VMware Horizon and vSphere maximizes the benefits of the leading virtualization platform for VDI.
  • For years VMware is the leader in the industry for Enterprise Mobility Management and vision for the digital workspace.

VMware Portfolio

Workspace ONE is an integrated digital workspace platform which is powered by VMware Airwatch Technology (see below). It offers you access control, application management and multi-platform endpoint management, on-premises or in the cloud.

Thanks to the integration with the Horizon desktop and app virtualization platform, you are able to:

  • Deliver and manage apps at scale
  • Provide remote apps
  • Virtualize Windows desktops and apps for delivery through a single digital workspace

Workspace ONE provides:

  • Easy & strong management across all devices and applications, anywhere, across all use cases (also BYOD)
  • Unified and scalable endpoint management to manage apps across all platforms (Windows 10, Android, iOS, Chrome OS, MacOS…)
  • High security. It includes the capabilities to protect, detect and remediate against current threats
  • Simple Access Management through secure, password-free Single-Sign-On (SSO)
  • Fast deployment of new applications
  • Powerful troubleshooting

Horizon offers virtualized or hosted desktops and applications through a single VDA and app virtualization platform. It allows you to extend virtualization from the data center to your devices in a secure way. The users get the applications and desktops in just seconds.

Horizon lets you consolidate control, and enables you to set policies that dynamically adapt to the end user’s computing environment. This will result in reduced storage and operational costs.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN)

NSX is a product that allows you to add virtual networks and security, also called software-defined networking, to the datacenter virtualization solution of VMware.

NSX is part of VMware’s software-defined data center concept that enables to do cloud computing on top of the VMware virtualization technology. VMware gives end-users the ability to develop virtual networks, with NSX, from a fully Graphical User Interface (GUI) and without the intervention of a network administrator.

VMware NSX links overlay networks over an existing infrastructure. That allows applications and data to be available, anywhere. That also ensures that application environments can be moved to data centers from a distance, e.g. disaster recovery, and all that without having to adapt the IP addresses.

Adding vendor-independent services to NSX

With VMware, you can add logical vendor-independent services to NSX.  You can, for example, add logical Palo Alto Networks Firewalls and F5 logical load balancers via a virtual machine and that way, you are able to provide additional services and functionalities. That is called micro segmentation. The east-west traffic between two virtual machines for example, can be protected by adding a logical Palo Alto Firewall. In this process, traffic doesn’t have to leave the virtual environment.

The VMware NSX manager, the management platform of the NSX environment, is also working with third-party hardware to realize the transition between the physical and the virtual network. To make this possible, big names such as Juniper, HPE and others use open standards (OVSDB and VXLAN). That allows the integration between VMware NSX and physical workloads e.g. Oracle servers, SQL BD servers and others.

The NSX manager also ensures that the delivery of virtual networks and related services can be automated so templates of complete environments (servers, network components and security) can be built. Those environments can be launched and deleted with one push of a button.
